Pope Francis cause of death has been revealed in a medical report released by the Vatican.
Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025. He was aged 88.
Hours after the pope was pronounced dead, the report on his death was released to ascertain the condition that ended the life of the pontiff who had been unwell for weeks.
The official medical report on the death of Pope Francis was certified by Dr Andrea Arcangeli, the Director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of the Vatican City State.
The Vatican said the official medical report on the death of Pope Francis was confirmed through electrocardiographic thanatography – which is basically a procedure to confirm death using an electrocardiogram to measure the heart’s electrical activity where by if there is no heartbeat or electrical signal from the heart, one is pronounced dead.
The Pope Francis’ cause of death was identified as a stroke, followed by a coma and irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse, the Vatican reported.
The medical report also indicates that the Pope had a prior history of acute respiratory failure caused by multimicrobial bilateral pneumonia, multiple bronchiectases, high blood pressure, and Type II diabetes.
