Pope Francis has died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, has announced.
Farrell made the sad announcement at 9:45 AM, confirming the pope died at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father,” he announced.
“His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
On Friday, February 14, 2025, Pope Francis was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital for treatment after suffering bronchitis.
On Tuesday, February 18, doctors diagnosed him with bilateral pneumonia.
He spent 38 days in hospital after which he was discharged and went to his Vatican residence at the Casa Santa Marta.
It should be remembered that in 1957, while he was in his early 20s, the pope — then Jorge Mario Bergoglio — underwent surgery in his home country of Argentina for the removal of a portion of his lung which had been damaged by a severe respiratory infection.
He would suffer respiratory illnesses in recent years. For example, in November 2023, Pope Francis cancelled his visit to the UAE after suffering from influenza and lung inflammation.
