LIST: Top 100 Universities in Africa in 2025. Makerere Drops to 41st in Latest Rankings

Makerere University, Uganda’s largest and oldest higher learning institution, has dropped to the 41st position in Africa, the lowest in about two decades, according to data seen by The Pearl Times.

The latest Times Higher Education (THE) rankings 2025 show that Makerere University and 33 other universities are tied in the 41st position.

The 2025 university rankings looked at 18 performance indicators such as teaching quality, research output, industry engagement, and global outlook for universities drawn from 19 African countries.

South African universities dominated the rankings, the University of Cape Town Stellenbosch University and the University of the Witwatersrand taking top spots.

Morocco’s Mohammed VI Polytechnic University and the University of Johannesburg completed the top five universities in Africa, according to the list seen by The Pearl Times.

In terms of countries with most universities on the list, The Pearl Times counted 35 universities from Egypt and 26 from Algeria.
