Ugandan education institutions keep blowing their trumpets as leading others in provision of higher education services. But the list of Uganda’s best universities and institutes in 2024 may surprise many.
While there are many entities ranking universities and institutes, The Pearl Times University Guide has chosen Webometrics rankings for its criteria.
The rankings are based on the parameters of visibility, transparency and excellence. Visibility or Web contents Impact parameter focuses on the number of external networks or subnets linking to the institution’s webpages (normalized averaged value is chosen). This parameter takes 50 per cent in the rankings.
The transparency or openness parameter assesses top cited researchers from a particular university or institute. The key source for such citations is Google Scholar Profiles. This parameter takes only 10 per cent.
The excellence indicator looks at top cited papers from a university or institute. Taking 40 per cent, the indicator, the parameter focuses on the number of papers amongst the top 10 per cent most cited in each one of the all 27 disciplines of the full database.
This ranking is based on data from 2018 through 2022.
The rankings indicate the Makerere University is still the best university in Uganda while Kampala international University (KIU) is the second best. Makerere is the finest public university while KIU tops its private universities category.
