It Brings Tears to My Eyes: Janet Museveni Speaks of a ‘Significant Transition’ & ‘Defining Moment’ for Uganda

First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni is talking of a significant transition and a successful succession and of a theme that “brings tears to my eyes” days after a joint public apology from her and her husband President Yoweri Museveni.

Museveni came to power in 1986 after five years of bush war. He promised a fundamental change and diagnosed the problem of Africa as leaders who overstay in power.

Now aged 80, Museveni has been in power for a cool four decades, and is expected to seek re-election when the impoverished East African land locked country goes to the polls next year.

But his wife of half a century is speaking of “a defining moment” for the country of nearly 50 million people, most of them youthful and young.

Last week, Janet and Museveni attended the Light Up Uganda for Jesus Mission 2025 organized by their daughter Pastor Patience Rwabwogo, wife to presidential advisor Odrek Rwabwogo.

At the end of the conference held at the Kololo Independence Grounds and attended by local pastors and Bishops as well as American evangelist Bishop Dr LaDonna Osborn.

Janet Museveni said when Osborn, in company of Pastor Patience Rwabwogo, visited them at the State Lodge, they got “an opportunity for deep spiritual reflection and reinforced the bond of friendship between our families in faith.”

Together with Bishop Osborn, Museveni, Janet and Patience “prayed together for Uganda’s future.”

For Patience Rwabwogo’s ministry, tens of religious leaders were commissioned. Janet Museveni urged them to help lead the country to a successful transition.

“To the 23 elders and 16 deacons who were commissioned, leadership is not for the faint-hearted—I speak from experience,” she noted. “Yet with God by our side, I urge you to help lead our nation to a successful transition.”

DEFINING MOMENT

Noting that she was deeply moved by the theme of this year’s mission, Janet Museveni called on the church to unite in the fight against the enemy that may want to “derail” the destiny of Uganda during the transition period.

“The theme, ‘The Crossing,’ deeply moves me and brings tears to my eyes. We are at a defining moment in our nation’s history, experiencing a significant transition. The Word of God teaches that the enemy often seeks to derail the destiny of people and nations during such times,” noted Janet Museveni.

“My call to you, the Church of Christ, is to remind you that this transition is leading us into a new season that requires the Church to stand united and embody a spirit of humble servant leadership.

“We must lay aside every sin that easily besets us and every weight. It is a season to unite which gives us the strength to fight a common enemy because where there is unity, there, the Lord commands a blessing, even life forevermore.”

It should be remembered that Museveni and Janet apologized to Buganda and all Ugandans at the Kololo conference, but some Ugandans reacted by telling the president to peacefully hand over power if he means it. (See Details Here).

Meanwhile, the first son and military chief Gen Muhoozi – considered by some to be Museveni’s potential successor – did not attend the prayers at Kololo. Instead he and his supporters took issue with Odrek Rwabwogo telling Ugandans not to bring back Bachwezi, who Muhoozi seems to promote on top of confessing Jesus Christ.
