It is a sad day for Parliament of Uganda after former MP Margaret Baba Diri died on the same day that Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya passed on.
Baba Diri was one of Uganda’s longest serving MPs. She served as MP representing Persons with Disabilities in Parliament. She was also Koboko District Woman MP.
The late Margaret Baba Diri joined Parliament in 1996. She was last a Member of Parliament in 2021. Her death was confirmed during parliamentary plenary on Thursday, January 09, 2025.
Margaret Baba Diri was founder of Kochi SS. She was also the brains behind Koboko District Farmers Association. Born on June 29, 1954, Margaret Baba Diri was 70.
She was a widow by the time of her death. She reportedly died on her way to hospital.
Regarding her education, she held a Diploma in Education from the National Teachers College Kyambogo, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Adult and Community Education from Kyambogo University.
She taught at St Charles Lwanga Koboko between 1976 and 1990. She also served as a gender development officer at the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) from 1992 to 1996.
In 1996, Baba Diri joined elective politics. She served five-year terms from 1996 to 2021.
She served on a number of parliamentary committees, including the Parliamentary Committee on Commissions, State Authorities and State Enterprises and the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Sports.
