End of an Era: Opposition Bigwigs in Buganda Defeated in MP Elections

The writing was on the wall for these opposition titans. The recent elections were a wrecking ball, smashing the hopes of several high-profile leaders. Let us dissect the defeated giants — the Opposition Bigwigs in Buganda Defeated in MP Elections.

Mathias Mpuuga: The Maverick’s Meteoric Fall

Mathias Mpuuga, the former leader of the opposition in parliament, was a comet blazing across Uganda’s political sky. But his decision to bolt NUP for the Democratic Front party was a fatal spin, sending him hurtling into oblivion. Lubowa Ssebina Gyavira (NUP) was the gravitational force that pulled him down from his Nyendo-Mukungwe MP seat. The Shs500 million service award scandal was the anchor that weighed him down.

Muwanga Kivumbi: The Firebrand’s Fading Ember

Muwanga Kivumbi, the fiery MP from Butambala County and deputy NUP president, was a burning flame that refused to be extinguished. But even the brightest flames flicker out eventually. Kivumbi’s vocal criticism and activism made him a household name, but couldn’t shield him from the electoral storm. Eriasa Mukiibi Sserunjogi, an independent candidate, was the gust that snuffed out the ember.

Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda: The Mvule Felled

Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, the seasoned politician and PFF spokesperson, was a mighty mvule tree that stood tall for over a decade. But even the strongest trees can fall. Ssemujju’s strong leadership and advocacy for opposition unity were the roots that kept him grounded, but couldn’t withstand the NUP storm. George Musisi (NUP) was the axe that felled the mvule, winning by a convincing margin in Kira Municipality.

Medard Sseggona: The Sharp Blade Blunted

Medard Sseggona, a brilliant lawyer and NUP MP, was a scalpel cutting through Uganda’s political noise. His wit and legal acumen made him a formidable opponent, but even the sharpest blades can lose their edge. Sseggona’s backing of Mathias Mpuuga amidst controversy raised eyebrows, and he ultimately lost his seat. He lost to independent candidate Emmanuel Magoola in Busiro East.
