Charlie Kirk, an influential ally of US president Donald Trump has been assassinated at a university event in Utah.
A Conservative activist, Charlie Kirk was aged 31. He was shot and killed as he spoke at Utah Valley University (UVU).
Seated under a white gazebo, he was addressing about 3,000 people when he was shot dead. A figure wearing dark clothing appeared on a roof and fired a single shot, hitting him on his carotid artery, the BBC reported.
Two suspects who had been arrested in connection with the shooting have since been released.
“We initially took in George Zinn as a suspect. He was later released and charged with obstruction by UVU police,” said the Utah Department of Public Safety in a statement.
“A second suspect, Zachariah Qureshi, was taken into custody and released after interrogation with law enforcement. There are no current ties to the shooting with either of these individuals. There is an ongoing investigation and manhunt for the shooter.”
Reports say that Kirk’s wife and family were at the event but were not hurt.
Rushed to hospital following the shooting, Charlie Kirk, the Turning Point USA founder, was confirmed dead hours later.
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
Trump has since ordered that flags fly at half-mast in honor of Charlie Kirk.
“As a mark of respect for the memory of Charlie Kirk, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, September 14, 2025,” Trump’s proclamation read.
“I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.”
