Ugandan academic, write and activist Dr Stella Nyanzi says she has been prevented from returning to Germany as a refugee.
Dr Stella Nyanzi has been living in Germany with her children, all as refugees, who ran from persecution in President Yoweri Museveni’s Uganda.
She said a German migration official from the Germany Embassy in Nairobi had barred her from boarding an Etihad Airways flight at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, Kenya.
Identified as Constantine, the official insisted that Nyanzi did not meet the requirements for a refugee status, and that she did not have any valid documents to prove so.
Yet Stella Nyanzi presented a letter from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees dated March 05, 2025, confirming her refugee status under article 3(1) of the Germany Asylum Act.
Dr Nyanzi said she was shocked to be blocked from returning to Germany.
“As a Ugandan refugee in Germany, I’m shocked that I have been denied re-entry into Germany by the German ILO in Nairobi called Constantine. Not only that, but Constantine has also denied me permission to board Etihad Airways this evening at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport,” wrote Nyanzi.
“Constantine has declared that I am NOT a refugee in Germany. Despite showing the positive decision of Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge (BAMF) which firmly states that I am a refugee in Munich, he asserts I have not yet received a decision on my application. Germans!”
Missing her flight, Nyanzi had decided to wait for the German official to change her mind.
“My flight departed. My three children are waiting for me at home in Munich. My taxi returned to Nairobi. I checked out of my BnB. I have a weekend of waiting to see this Constantine at the German embassy,” she further noted.
“I h@te the dehumanizat!on of being a refugee who must first beg to go home!”

It should be remembered that Stella Nyanzi has in recent times had clashes with other Ugandans exiled in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, with her taking sides in the case of novelist Kakwenza Rukirabashaija and his church wife Eva Basiima.
PEN Germany, under its Writers in Exile Program, which initially rooted for Nyanzi, recently warned her against sharing sensit!ve documents and other information on Basiima.
As Nyanzi was sharing shocking Kakwenza-Basiima information, Kakwenza Rukirabashaija revealed details of his failed relationship with a Mzungu woman. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
Meanwhile, as Stella Nyanzi puts the German official on the spot, the German Ambassador in Uganda stands accused by the UPDF of funding rebels plotting to remove Museveni. (See Details Here and There).
