Main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has spoken out on claims by UPDF regard German Ambassador ‘rebel funding’ claims.
The claims came a few days after German Ambassador to Uganda Matthias Schauer and other European Union envoys expressed concern and worry about reckless and undiplomatic social media posts by first son and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
The EU ambassadors met Museveni’s younger brother Gen Caleb Akandwanaho aka Salim Saleh in the northern city of Gulu, where they expressed deep frustrations and worry that Muhoozi’s posts were injuring Uganda’s reputation across the world.
Saleh said he could only apologize on behalf of Muhoozi but could not do anything much to stop his careless tweets.
Salim Saleh also went about explaining that the current crop of generals of Muhoozi’s generation, whom he said were almost Gen Zs, had their way of doing things that is different from the one he and the old generals did things.
Museveni’s son had warned sanctions after an EU delegation met Bobi Wine and other NUP officials to discuss Uganda’s human rights situation.
“Just hours after the Gulu meeting, the regime has retaliated, now ridiculously accusing Ambassador Schauer of sponsoring unidentified rebel groups to overthrow it! What more? They have stated that most of those so-called rebels are supporters of NUP!” Bobi Wine reacted.
Bobi Wine noted that there was nothing new in the claims by the UPDF as issued by acting defence spokesperson Col Chris Magezi, and that these were meant to silence the opposition and envoys raising questions on the state of human rights in the country.
“This is an all-too-familiar script by the regime: manufacturing ‘threats’ to shield itself from accountability and justify its relentless violent persecution of whoever demands an end to its dictatorship and corruption,” noted Bobi Wine.
“It is the same script the regime uses to rationalize the abduction, torture, and disappearance of our comrades by falsely accusing them of being criminals in an attempt to silence and intimidate us.”
He also called on the international community to “recognize these tactics for what they truly are and continue holding the regime accountable for its transgressions against the people of Uganda and humanity as a whole.”
He added: “The well-meaning people of Uganda will not be cowed into silence, but will continue pursuing all lawful means to put an end to the regime of bl00d and shame.
