CCTV evidence has mapped Christopher Okello Onyum’s movements before Ggaba daycare killings.
The 13th witness presented by the state prosecution with the aim of pinning Christopher Okello Onyum provided court with a detailed reconstruction of the movements of the murder suspect using CCTV footage gathered from across Kampala in the hours leading up to the Ggaba daycare killings.
The witness was Assistant Inspector of Police Emmanuel Odongo, a CCTV analyst at the National Command and Control Centre.
Odongo testified that he reviewed and compiled surveillance clips tracking the suspect’s movements both a day before and on the day of the attack.
According to Odongo, the suspect was first seen driving a Toyota RAV4 through Kyanja, then Kisaasi in Nakawa Division, before proceeding into the central parts of Kampala.
The vehicle was later captured moving through Nakawa town, New Vision Junction, and near the Electoral Commission, before heading toward Kibuli.
The CCTV trail continued as the car passed through Kabalagala, Kansanga, and Bunga, eventually reaching Ggaba Trading Centre shortly after midday.
Footage from a private camera at a SACCO near the scene showed Okello parking the vehicle, stepping out, locking it, and checking the doors before walking in the direction of the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre.
He returned to the car about 11 minutes later and drove off, rejoining Ggaba Road through a smaller route. However, Odongo highlighted a suspicious stop when the vehicle disappeared from camera coverage between Ggaba and Bunga for approximately one hour and 40 minutes—despite the short distance between the two locations.
When the vehicle reappeared, it was seen again moving through Bunga, Kansanga, and Kabalagala, passing traffic lights near Arena Mall, and later heading back toward the Electoral Commission area before stopping at a Shell fuel station along Jinja Road. At the station, the suspect was observed interacting with attendants and making phone calls.
On the day of the killings, CCTV cameras captured Okello traveling as a passenger on a motorcycle from Nanjala Road, heading toward the Ggaba–Kawuku junction. He was reportedly carrying a backpack and was later identified through his clothing following his arrest.
Odongo further told court that private surveillance cameras recorded victims being rushed to Wentz Medical Centre, with a time gap of about one hour and four minutes between the suspect’s presence near the scene and the arrival of the victims.
The court admitted both the CCTV footage and Odongo’s report as evidence, with the prosecution arguing that the analysis firmly places Okello at critical points before and after the April 2 incident.
In earlier testimony, car rental director Hashim Juma confirmed that Okello had hired the same Toyota RAV4. He explained that the suspect reported mechanical problems along Jinja Road and was advised to park at the Shell station as repairs were arranged.
However, further issues were reported shortly after, and the suspect failed to follow through on payment arrangements.
