Besigye to international community: Interest yourselves in Bobi Wine protests’ killings before it’s too late

Veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has urged international community and bodies to investigate the killing of civilians during city protests sparked off by the arrest of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.

Over 30 people were killed as security agencies moved to quell riots that rocked Kampala and other urban areas on November 18 and 19.

While the UN and powerful western nations have issued statements, Besigye is concerned their reluctance to take bold interventions to stop the Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni administration from using security agencies to shoot unarmed civilians could see more lives lost.

Comparing the protest fatalities to the Rwenzururu crisis, Besigye has now urged the international community to probe the Bobi Wine riots, establish the death toll and cause the prosecution of perpetrators.

“What was witnessed was planned outright election violence. Just like the 2016 post-election Kasese massacre, there are now calls for an independent inquiry into the November 18/19th Kampala massacre,” he said.

With Ugandan security agencies being accused of high-handedness, the opposition strongman argues that “no one can investigate their own crimes.”

“This is why sub-regional, regional and international bodies should step forward and discharge the responsibilities of their bodies’ Constitutive Acts and treaties. Sadly, for now, they’re all conspicuous by their total silence!” further noted Besigye.

“It may, soon, be too late to meaningfully help.”
