2026 Elections

ATTENTION SEEKER? Moses Nsereko Declares Bid to Unseat Museveni After Failing to Win Kawempe North MP Election

Nsereko Wants Bobi Wine’s NUP Flag

After performing miserably in last month’s by-election to replace the late Muhammad Ssegirinya in Kawempe North, Moses Nsereko is back: this time seeking to unseat President Yoweri Museveni.

Famous for his attention-seeking antics, Moses Nsereko polled miserably in the Kawempe North by-election, managing only 32 votes and beating the last candidate, Edward Stanley Maitum Engena, an independent who got 23 votes.

The race was won by main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi, who got 17,939 votes, according to official results gazetted by the Electoral Commission on March 20.

Nsereko himself had been a candidate in the race for the NUP ticket. After failing to secure the NUP ticket, Nsereko chose to run as an independent candidate.

When he lost to Nalukoola, he claimed he had not clearly understood the results, and even threatened to challenge the results in court, barely a year to another election.

Now, Moses Nsereko is back in the news: this time saying he will seek to end Museveni’s rule of nearly four decades in 2026.

Nsereko says he will once again ask the NUP electoral committee to hand him the NUP flag to challenge Museveni next year.

It is hoped that the NUP will retain Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine, its 2021 candidate, as presidential candidate.

Nsereko says if he is ever elected president he will ensure that he cuts salaries of MPs, ministers and heads of government agencies by at least 50 per cent and raise salaries of health workers, teachers, and security officers by 50 per cent.

He also plans to cut the number of MPs in Uganda so that each district is represented by two MPs: a male and a female. That would leave Uganda with less than 300 MPs, a little over a half the current number.

Uganda’s 2026 presidential election is likely to attracting many candidates challenging Museveni. This week, a bodaboda rider with a university degree declared his bid to unseat Museveni, as reported Here.

Also, a former street vendor who used to sell sponges has declared he will also run for president and has even promised to pay LC One chairpersons and VHTs, with the village bosses even included on the government payroll. (See Details Here and There).
