ANOTHER DIVORCE: Top Ugandan Media Scholar Divorces Feminist Lawyer after 20 Years

Journalist and media scholar Peter G Mwesige and human rights lawyer Jacqueline Asiimwe have divorced after almost two decades of marriage.

The High Court in Kampala dissolved the marriage union on November 30.

But Mwesige, the Co-founder and Executive Director of the African Centre for Media Excellence (Acme), and Asiimwe, the Chief Executive Officer of CivSource Africa, will keep co-parenting responsibilities.

“Friends, the High Court in Kampala has this afternoon agreed to dissolve our marriage of nearly 20 years. It was not all pretty, but I thank God for the life we shared for about 18 years,” tweeted Mwesige.

“Jackie and I will continue sharing the responsibility of bringing up our boys.”

Mwesige’s friends expressed their sadness at the duo’s decision, but wished each of them well.

Peter and Jackie wedded in 2001 at a ceremony in Perryman, Maryland, USA. Ugandan cleric Rev Stephen Bamutungire, chaplain of St George’s Episcopal Church presided over the wedding.

George Lugalambi was Mwesige’s best-man at the ceremony only attended by 40 guests, including Dismus Nkunda and Vukoni Lupa Lasaga.
