President Yoweri Museveni has directed that the late Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, be accorded an official burial and that Uganda’s national flags be flown at half-mast for three days in honour of the deceased monarch.
King Oyo, who died at the age of 34, passed away after battling an aggressive form of cancer, according to President Museveni.
In a condolence message issued following the King’s death, Museveni described Oyo as a prominent member of the younger generation and expressed deep sorrow over his death at such a young age.
“It is with a lot of sadness that, on the behalf of all Ugandans, Maama Janet and myself, I extend our most heart-felt condolences to the Royal Family of Tooro and to all Ugandans on account of the death of the prominent Muzzukulu, His Highness Oyo, the King of Tooro at such a young age of 34. How unfair life can be!! He was orphaned while still young and he has died young.”
Museveni said the King had demonstrated considerable potential during his relatively short reign, particularly through his relationship with both the Central Government and local authorities.
“In the short life on earth, he had shown that he had potential of working well with the Central and Local Governments to develop Tooro. What a loss to Tooro and Uganda.”
The President revealed that the Royal Family had informed him months ago that King Oyo was suffering from an aggressive form of cancer.
According to Museveni, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa personally briefed him about the King’s condition before the Government supported efforts to seek specialised treatment abroad.
“Some months back, Her Royal Highness Kemigisa, Nyinomukama, came to tell me that the Muzzukulu Oyo had cancer that was very aggressive. The Government supported them to go to Germany and, then, the USA where he died.”
King Oyo’s health had remained a subject of intense concern in Tooro in the days leading up to his death, with the Kingdom eventually appealing for prayers as his condition deteriorated.
His death has now plunged the kingdom into mourning and triggered preparations for traditional rites ahead of his burial.
Amid the grief, Museveni disclosed that King Oyo left behind a young son who is expected to become the next heir to the Tooro throne.
The President said Queen Mother Kemigisa informed him of the development during a telephone conversation.
“Fortunately, in a telephone call, Her Royal Highness Kemigisa, told me that H.H. Oyo left a young boy heir that will be introduced to the public at the right time.”
The disclosure comes at a critical moment for the Tooro Kingdom as royal officials begin the process of preparing for the succession and the traditional ceremonies surrounding the late monarch’s death.
The identity and formal introduction of the young heir are expected to be handled in accordance with Tooro cultural and royal traditions.
Museveni also used his condolence message to commend King Oyo for maintaining a cooperative relationship with Uganda’s Central Government.
He said the late monarch avoided using the cultural institution to promote sectarian interests, warning other cultural leaders against turning restored cultural institutions into platforms for division.
“H.H. Oyo worked well with the Central Government, thereby avoiding the mistake of trying to use the Cultural Institutions that were restored by the NRM to promote sectarianism. It would be good if all the Cultural leaders understood the importance of this.”
The President’s remarks place Oyo’s short reign within Uganda’s broader post-1993 era of restored cultural institutions, while highlighting the relationship between traditional kingdoms and the state.
In a major state gesture following the King’s death, Museveni ordered that all flags be flown at half-mast for three days.
The period will cover the day of the burial, the day immediately before the burial and the day immediately after.
“I direct that H.H. Oyo be given an official burial and, for three days, all the flags fly at half-mast. The three days are: the day of the burial, the day before and the day after. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
The directive means the late Tooro monarch will receive formal state recognition as the kingdom prepares to lay him to rest.
King Oyo became one of Uganda’s most recognisable traditional leaders after ascending to the Tooro throne as a child. His death at 34 brings to an end a reign that spanned more than two decades and leaves Tooro facing another historic transition.
For the people of Tooro, however, the immediate focus remains mourning a king who was crowned as a child, grew into the role and died before reaching middle age.
His passing leaves behind a royal family in mourning, a kingdom preparing for burial rites and a young heir whose future will now become central to the continuation of the Tooro monarchy.
