Uganda’s intensifying anti-corruption crackdown has taken a dramatic turn after highly placed sources revealed that the bank accounts of Anita Among and her husband Moses Magogo have been frozen by the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA), as investigations into alleged illicit enrichment widen.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the account freeze is part of a broader financial intelligence operation targeting suspicious transactions and unexplained wealth linked to the Speaker.
The move mirrors previous FIA actions in Uganda, where accounts are frozen to preserve funds during active probes into suspected financial irregularities, although some of the previous actions such as those concerning NGOs were criticized as politically motivated.
The latest development comes amid mounting pressure from multiple state agencies, including the Inspectorate of Government (IGG), which has reportedly expanded its corruption probe into Among’s close associates and aides.
Investigators are said to be focusing on individuals believed to have acted as conduits in financial transactions tied to the Speaker.
Sources say the FIA’s intervention followed intelligence reports flagging large and irregular financial movements across accounts associated with Among and her inner circle over many months.
Financial analysts attached to the probe are examining bank records, asset purchases and company linkages to determine whether the funds can be traced to legitimate income streams.
The freezing of accounts is a critical step in Uganda’s anti-money laundering enforcement framework, allowing authorities to restrict access to funds while investigations continue.
The FIA is empowered to issue such directives where there is reasonable suspicion of money laundering, although courts have ruled that such actions must be backed by evidence and subjected to judicial oversight.
The probe into Among has unfolded rapidly over the past week, marked by high-profile searches at her residences in Kampala and other locations.
Security operatives seized luxury vehicles and documents believed to be critical to the investigation, underscoring the scale of the operation.
Parallel searches have also been conducted at Parliament, where investigators spent hours combing through files and electronic records in Among’s office.
The search forms part of a wider effort to establish whether official processes were abused to facilitate illicit financial gains.

Investigators are particularly interested in the rapid accumulation of wealth linked to the Speaker, which they believe may be disproportionate to her known earnings as a public official.
This line of inquiry has been reinforced by earlier scrutiny of her assets, including property ownership both in Uganda and abroad, which has drawn the attention of state authorities.
Magogo, a legislator and prominent figure in Ugandan football administration, has also come under the spotlight due to shared financial interests and joint accounts with Among.
Sources indicate that tracing financial links between the couple is central to establishing how funds moved across different accounts and investments.
Investigators are now zeroing in on networks of associates, including politicians and aides, who may have played roles in facilitating or concealing financial transactions. This suggests the inquiry could extend well beyond the Speaker herself.
