NUP Deputy Spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro has been abducted, the main opposition political party has said.
Mufumbiro was picked at the Kawempe Magistrates Court, the National Unity Platform (NUP) further said.
The ‘abductors’ were armed and used a Toyota Noah registration number UAK 368K in their scheme, according to a statement by the NUP.
Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro was in court where NUP members and bodyguards to party president Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine were appearing.
“Just a few minutes back at the Kawempe Magistrates Court, our Deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro has been abducted by armed gunmen travelling in a Toyota Noah registration number UAK 368K,” the party said in a statement issued at about 1pm local time on Monday, September 8, 2025.
“He was attending court for our comrades Eddie Mutwe, Achileo Kivumbi and Tasi Calvin (Bobi Giant). The impunity continues!”
Bobi Wine has said the Museveni regime may soon get what it is looking for from the abductions.
“Just learnt of the violent abduction of our brother, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro. Museveni and his criminal regime will eventually get what they’re looking for,” he wrote.
The abduction of Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro follows that of Tasi Calvin aka Bobi Giant who was abducted outside Riham factory in Kawempe by armed soldiers who whisked him away in a drone, according to Bobi Wine.
The NUP leader further noted that in Katakwi District, police detained several leaders of the NUP, including Jonathan Okware who coordinates Teso sub-region, NUP’s Toroma County chairperson Ijonai Juventine, “and other comrades whom we had just nominated for local government positions in the district.”
“Evidently, this is not legitimate enforcement of the law but a well-calculated scheme to silence NUP supporters countrywide, while thugs who support the regime are left to roam the streets terrorizing citizens with zero consequences!” noted Bobi Wine.
“We call on all Ugandans to speak out against this stinking impunity and condemn the cowardly repression in the strongest the possible! We also demand the immediate and unconditional release of all our people unjustly detained for supporting us!”
