Tanga Collins, son to Tanga Odoi, has been elected new NRM Youth League chairperson amidst controversy. Tanga Odoi himself, the chairperson of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission (EC), declared Tanga Collins the winner of the NRM Youth League Chairperson election.
According to official results by the NRM EC, Tanga Collins polled 1,567 while Brenda Kiconco got 1,355 votes.
But the Brenda Kiconco camp has been complaining that they were rigged out, with what was supposed to be their victory swapped and handed to Tanga Collins.
There were also allegations that some students from Makerere University, where both Tanga Odoi and Tanga Collins wield significant influence, were ferried in as delegates.
Attempts to stick to the register of delegates were unsuccessful, the Brenda Kiconco camp further complained.
Tensions flared up at around 10pm when Brenda Kiconco ordered the delegates who were supporting her not to vote in a “sham election.”
Tanga Odoi then spewed venom, asking “who is Kiconco?” that she can stop voting ordered by the NRM EC chairperson. He then called in police to restore calm.
The Brenda Kiconco camp is now challenging the election of Tanga Collins and his declaration by his father Tanga Odoi.
Youth elections were expected to be held on August 25 but were pushed to the following day after delays caused by protests by the Hassan Basajjabalaba camp. More of these have been rescheduled for Wednesday, 27 August 2025.
