There was tension at the Kololo Independence Grounds in the capital Kampala on Tuesday, 26 August 2025, as ‘Hassan Basajjabalaba Delegates’ protested suspension of NRM entrepreneurs’ league elections.
On Monday, 25 August 2025, President Yoweri Museveni, the national chairman of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), directed the suspension of NRM Entrepreneurs’ League Elections.
The directive followed allegations that some candidates in the NRM Entrepreneurs’ League Elections had hidden delegates in top hotels around Kampala and in Kenya so that campaigning competitors do not have access to them.
There were also allegations of huge amounts of money being dished out as bribes to delegates.
The suspension of the NRM Entrepreneurs’ League Elections was meant to allow time for investigations into the allegations of hiding delegates and voter bribery.
It was expected, at least by members of the Hassan Basajjabalaba camp, that the investigation would happen in a matter of hours to allow the conducting of NRM Entrepreneurs’ League elections.
But Dr Tanga Odoi and his NRM Electoral Commission (EC) moved to conduct elections of the Women’s League and the youth polls, ignoring the entrepreneurs’ league polls.
It was not long before supporters of Hassan Basajjabalaba, donning yellow clothes and holding their preferred candidate’s posters, stormed Kololo Independence Grounds to demand that elections be held immediately.
The delegates and supporters of Basajjabalaba told NRM secretary general Richard Todwong and EC boss Tanga Odoi that they were tired of waiting and needed the elections held as soon as possible.
The protesters took some of the time and space that Tanga Odoi had planned to use for NRM youth league elections.
Police would later seal off the election grounds and forcefully create space for the youth league election as the pro-Basajjabalaba declined to give way.
