WHAT KILLED OMUKAMA OYO? Reports Link Tooro King’s Death to Cancer as Kingdom Keeps Cause of Death Private

The death of Tooro’s Omukama, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, has raised fresh questions about the illness that left the 34-year-old monarch critically ill before his death in the United States.

King Oyo died at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, according to Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki. However, the Kingdom has not officially disclosed the medical cause of death.

The lack of an official medical explanation has fuelled speculation, particularly after reports emerged that the King had been receiving medical care in the United States.

Carefully stressing that the Kingdom had not provided details about the illness or the hospital where he died, some reports had linked the monarch’s illness to cancer.

Other media reports have gone further, citing unnamed sources who claimed that King Oyo had been diagnosed with advanced-stage brain cancer and that he had been in a coma for days before his death. Those claims, however, have not been confirmed by the Tooro Kingdom officials or the royal family.

The cancer reports are particularly sensitive because they contradict an earlier official position from the Kingdom.

On August 3, Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Rwomiire dismissed reports that King Oyo was suffering from cancer and undergoing treatment in the United States. At the time, he described the reports as false and misleading, saying the King was abroad for studies rather than medical treatment. The situation changed dramatically on August 27.

As reports about the King’s death spread, the Kingdom initially announced that Oyo was alive but in a critical condition, asking the public to pray for him while declining to reveal the nature of his illness or details of his treatment.

Minister Balaam Barugahara subsequently confirmed that the King was receiving medical care in the United States, saying: “His Majesty the King of Tooro is still unwell and remains under medical management in the United States of America.”

Hours later, the Kingdom confirmed that Oyo had died.

In announcing the death, Rwomiire did not mention cancer, brain cancer or any other specific disease.

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, at approximately 10:00 p.m. this evening,” the Prime Minister said.

He described the death as “an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the nation of Uganda.”

The Prime Minister said the Kingdom would issue further communication containing details about funeral and mourning arrangements.

For now, therefore, cancer remains a reported explanation rather than an officially established cause of death.

What is confirmed is that King Oyo was seriously ill, was receiving medical care in the United States, was declared to be in critical condition on Thursday, and died later that night at the age of 34.

The circumstances surrounding his final illness are likely to become clearer when the royal family or Tooro Kingdom releases further information.

King Oyo ascended the Tooro throne on September 12, 1995, at the age of three, following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. He went on to reign for nearly 31 years, becoming one of Uganda’s most prominent cultural leaders.
