Main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine has urged Ugandans to isolate and vote out all MPs who chewed Shs100m bribe, each, in the 2026 general elections.
Hundreds of MPs, mostly belonging to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), have pocketed Shs100m each. The money is said to have come from NRM chairman and Uganda’s president Yoweri Museveni as a token of appreciation to legislators for passing the controversial coffee bill.
The bribe, considered the Easter cash bonanza, has prompted criticism from several Ugandans who have blasted MPs for being greedy, selfish and inconsiderate, and parliament of Uganda for being a house of deals.
Speaking at his party’s headquarters in Makerere-Kavule after welcoming new members into the National Unity Platform, Bobi Wine condemned the act of MPs taking the Shs100m each, money also seen as a bribe for them to amend the UPDF Act so as to drag civilians back into military courts for trial.
“These amendments are politically motivated and brought in bad faith with the intention of overturning the Supreme Court’s decision of January 31 blocking the prosecution of civilians and dictator Museveni’s opponents in army courts,” said Bobi Wine as he welcomed members who defected from other political parties to the NUP, plus some representatives to cultural institutions.
Bobi Wine continued to question the priorities of MPs who put themselves above the constituencies they represent.
“Each year, the regime lends each of Uganda’s 10,717 Parishes a total 100 MILLION to fight poverty under the so-called ‘Parish Development Model’. This money is given to each Parish regardless of its population, to be paid back with a 6% interest!” the NUP principal said.
“It’s disturbing that while thousands of citizens in beneficiary parishes struggle to share the 100 million, a single MP pocketed the same amount to betray them.”
Bobi Wine also salute the opposition MPs who have confirmed that they have not received the money but told them to do more in condemning the bribery. He also rallied Ugandans to vote out all MPs who received the Shs100m bribe.
He also told any NUP MP who might have pocketed the money to know that they will be dealt with accordingly.
“We commend the over 70 MPs who have since signed a Resolution condemning this act of high treason against the people. We challenge them to take a step further and strongly speak out in public against this theft. We also call upon the public to isolate every MP who took a share of this loot, and extract from them the ultimate price at the next election,” continued Bobi Wine.
“On our end as the NUP, if we get evidence that any of our MPs in NUP took this money, we shall take a firm stand against you, no matter who you are, the same way we have dealt with those who stole before you.”
Bobi Wine also said that he will continue demanding for the release of the hundreds of political prisoners such as Bobi Young, Yasin Machete, and Sharif Kalanzi “who remain under illegal detentention 3 months after the Supreme Court decision stopping their trials in army courts.” He also demanded for “the unconditional release of our brothers and sisters from Karamoja who find themselves in similar circumstances.”
Earlier on April 16, a mannequin protest was held in Kampala as protesters called for the release of Dr Kizza Besigye, his aide and other political prisoners, as reported Here.
This week, Bobi Wine also shook Eastern Uganda, firing up mobilizers there to do all it takes to ensure that Museveni is sent into retirement in 2026. (See Details Here).
Meanwhile, Archbishop Kaziimba Mugalu has told MPs who took Shs100m bribes to repent. (See Details Here).
