
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced a nationwide recruitment exercise for 2026, inviting qualified Ugandan citizens to apply for both regular and professional positions across various fields.
According to a notice issued by the military, the recruitment exercise will be guided by district and city quotas derived from the Uganda National Population and Housing Census 2024.

The UPDF said the exercise is open to disciplined, patriotic, and qualified Ugandans who are willing to serve the country under the values of discipline, patriotism, and Pan-Africanism.
Recruitment Process to Run in Three Phases
The recruitment exercise will be conducted in three phases beginning this month.
The first phase involves online applications, which will run from June 10 to June 24, 2026. During this period, all aspiring candidates will be required to submit applications through the official UPDF recruitment portal.
Applicants must upload a passport photograph, academic documents from recognized institutions, and a copy of their National Identity Card.
The second phase, scheduled for July 1 to July 14, 2026, will involve the publication and display of shortlisted candidates. Successful applicants will have their names published on the UPDF website and displayed at district and city headquarters across the country.
Physical recruitment and interviews will take place during the third phase from July 20 to August 1, 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be required to report individually to designated recruitment centres for physical and medical assessments.
The UPDF said candidates reporting for physical recruitment must present handwritten applications bearing recommendations from local leaders, their National Identity Cards, original and photocopies of academic documents, as well as three coloured passport-size photographs.
Eligibility Requirements
The military emphasized that all applicants must be adult Ugandan citizens in possession of valid National Identity Cards.
Candidates must be physically and medically fit, have no criminal record, and be ready to undergo all prescribed recruitment tests.
Applications must also be endorsed by LC I, LC II and LC III chairpersons, the GISO or DISO, and the Resident District Commissioner (RDC). Applicants are required to apply from areas where they are bona fide residents.
Opportunities for General Recruits
For regular forces recruitment, the UPDF is targeting candidates aged between 18 and 22 years.
Applicants with Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) qualifications obtained in either 2024 or 2025 are eligible to apply.
The force is also recruiting UACE Arts candidates who obtained at least two principal passes and a minimum of 10 points in a single sitting, as well as UACE Science candidates with at least two principal passes and a minimum of eight points.
Science applicants are expected to have studied core science subjects including Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Technical Drawing, or Agriculture.
ICT and Engineering Professionals Needed
The UPDF is seeking Information and Communication Technology professionals below 25 years of age.
Eligible fields include Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Science, and Cyber Security.
Degree and diploma holders in the relevant disciplines are encouraged to apply.
The military is also recruiting engineering and logistics personnel, including degree holders in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Quantity Surveying, and Land Surveying.
Candidates with diplomas, certificates, and practical experience in trades such as welding, plumbing, carpentry, refrigeration, painting, firefighting, vehicle repair, heavy equipment operation, and lorry driving are also eligible under specified age limits.
Air Force Looking for Aviation Specialists
The UPDF Air Force is recruiting aviation professionals including pilot instructors, commercial pilots, aircraft maintenance engineers, air traffic controllers, and meteorologists.
Applicants must possess relevant professional qualifications and meet specific academic and age requirements outlined by the force.
Pilot instructors must hold both Private Pilot and Commercial Pilot Licences together with Instructor Ratings, while aircraft maintenance engineers are required to possess specialized diplomas in aircraft maintenance.
Health Sector Professionals Targeted
A significant portion of the recruitment exercise is dedicated to health services personnel.
The military is seeking specialist medical doctors, specialist pharmacists, medical officers, dental surgeons, nurses, allied health professionals, biomedical engineers, clinical psychologists, health informatics specialists, and health records personnel.
Applicants under the health category must have a minimum CGPA of 3.0 and possess valid annual practicing licences where applicable.
Specialists in oncology, cardiology, radiology, neurology, paediatrics, psychiatry, anaesthesia, ophthalmology, family medicine, internal medicine, and other medical fields are among those being sought.
Teachers, Lawyers, Sports Personalities and Musicians Invited
The recruitment exercise also targets legal practitioners aged 30 years and below who are advocates of the High Court of Uganda and subordinate courts with at least five years of legal practice.
Graduate teachers aged between 23 and 30 years are eligible to apply, particularly those with science education qualifications and valid registration certificates from the Ministry of Education and Sports.
Primary school teachers holding Bachelor’s Degrees in Primary Education are also eligible.
Talented sportsmen and women aged between 18 and 30 years are encouraged to apply, with participation in nationally organized sporting events considered an added advantage.
The military is further recruiting musicians for its marching band and jazz/live band units. Candidates aged between 18 and 24 years with musical knowledge, performance experience, and the ability to play instruments or sing are encouraged to apply.
Social Scientists Also Included
The UPDF is recruiting social scientists and humanists aged between 20 and 25 years.
Eligible qualifications include degrees in Social Work and Social Administration, Social Sciences, Psychology, Community-Based Rehabilitation, and Special Needs education.
UPDF Warns Against Fraud
The UPDF stressed that recruitment into the force is completely free of charge and warned members of the public against dealing with brokers or intermediaries.
The military urged applicants to report any cases of fraud to the nearest police station, DISO office, or UPDF unit.
It further warned that presenting forged or falsified documents is a criminal offence that could result in arrest and prosecution.
The force also encouraged women with professional qualifications to take advantage of the recruitment opportunity and apply.

UPDF GENERAL RECRUITMENT EXERCISE 2026

GENERAL ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Applicants must meet all the following conditions:

Character: Must be law‑abiding citizens with no criminal record.

RECRUITMENT PHASES.
The recruitment process is in phases:
Phase 1: Online Application (10 – 24 June 2026). All aspiring candidates must submit their applications online through the official UPDF Recruitment Portal at recruitment.updf.go.ug. Applicants will be required to upload their applications accompanied by the following documents:
Passport photo.
Academic documents from recognized institutions.
National Identity Card.
Phase 2: Shortlist and Display (01 – 14 July 2026). A shortlist of successful candidates will be published on the UPDF website and displayed at the respective City and District headquarters.
Phase 3: Physical Recruitment (20 July – 01 August 2026). Physical recruitment will be conducted nationwide, covering all districts and cities. The specific dates will be communicated in due course. Shortlisted applicants will be required to report individually to their assigned recruitment centers for physical and medical interviews. They must bring the following requirements:
Handwritten application bearing recommendations from LCI, 11, 111 and GISO/DISO
National Identity Card/NIN.
Original and copies of academic documents. Graduate documents must be certified.
Three (03) coloured passport-size photographs.
Each successful applicant will be issued an introduction card, which must be presented upon arrival at the assigned training centers on the stipulated dates.
TARGET CATEGORIES
GENERAL RECRUITS – AGED BETWEEN 18 AND 22 YEARS
Regular Forces. Applicants must hold a Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) obtained in either 2024 or 2025.
Regular Forces (UACE Arts). Applicants must hold a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) in arts subject combinations obtained in either 2024 or 2025, with at least two principal passes and a minimum score of ten (10) points in a single sitting.
 Regular Forces (UACE Sciences).
Applicants must hold a Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) in sciences obtained in either 2024 or 2025, with at least two principal passes and a minimum of eight (08) points in a single sitting. Subject combinations sat at A level must align with core science disciplines (Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Technical Drawing, or Agriculture).
INFORMATION, COMMUNICATION, AND TECHNOLOGY (ICT) PERSONNEL – AGED BELOW 25 YEARS OF AGE
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in IT‑related fields, including Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or Cyber and IT.
Applicants holding a Diploma in IT‑related fields, including Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or Cyber and IT.
ENGINEERING AND LOGISTICS PERSONNEL
Applicants holding a Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Upper Division in Land Survey, Quantity Survey, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Civil Engineering. Eligible candidates must be below 30 years of age.
Applicants holding Diplomas with credit or Certificates, and possessing at least three (03) years of practical experience in Land Survey, Quantity Survey, Architecture/Drafting, Electrical, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Carpentry, Painting, Welding, or Plumbing. Eligible candidates must be below 28 years of age.
Applicants holding Diplomas with credit or Certificates, and possessing at least three (03) years of practical experience in Firefighting, Search and Rescue, Light and Heavy Vehicle Repairs (including general mechanics, panel beating and spraying, wiring, and tyre management and maintenance), Truck and Heavy Duty Equipment Operation, or Lorry Driving. Eligible candidates must be below 28 years of age.
AVIATION PROFESSIONALS
Candidates must have qualifications relevant to the Air Force, including:
Pilot Instructors holding a Private Pilot License (PPL), Commercial Pilot License (CPL) and Instructor Rating, with a background of science combination at A-Level and two principal Age is below 35 years.
Qualified Pilots with a Private Pilot Licence (PPL), Commercial Pilot License (CPL)/Instructor Rating (IR), with a background of science combination at A-Level with two principal Age is below 30 years.
Aircraft Maintenance Engineers with Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Specialized in either Engine and Air frame or Avionics with two principle passes at A-Level. Age is below 30 years.
Qualified Air Traffic Controllers with any rating and a background of a BSc Degree with either Mathematics or Age is below 30 years.
Meteorologists with a BSc Degree or Diploma in Meteorology with a background of PEM, PCM, and MEG. Age is below 25 years.
HEALTH SERVICES PERSONNEL
Applicants under health services must have a CGPA of 3.0 or above and hold a valid annual practicing license. They must also meet the following requirements:
Specialist Medical Doctors – aged below 35 years. Applicant must hold a Master’s degree in oncology, cardiology, radiology, medicine and surgery, neurology, ophthalmology, ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), anaesthesia, paediatrics, psychiatry, orthodontics, urology, internal medicine, family medicine, or medical emergency.
Specialist Pharmacists — must hold a Master’s degree and be aged below 35 years.
Medical Officers — must hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree and be aged below 30 years.
Dental Surgeons – must hold a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and be aged below 30 years.
Nurses – aged below 28 years.
Specialist Nurses – applicant must hold a Master’s degree in critical care, paediatrics, or palliative care.
Diploma holders – critical care, paediatrics, palliative care, psychiatry, or emergency.
Certificate holders – dialysis, psychiatry, intensive care.
Allied Health Workers – aged below 28 years.
Allied Health Specialist. Applicant must hold a Master’s degree in cytotechnology, optometry, chiropractic medicine, speech and language therapy, anaesthesia, physiotherapy, or dental technology.
Degree holders (cytotechnology, optometry, chiropractic medicine, speech and language therapy, anaesthesia, physiotherapy, or dental technology),
Diploma holders (ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), Pharmacy, physiotherapy, ophthalmology, clinical psychiatry, or health promotion)
Certificate holders specialised in theatre techniques.
Other categories – aged below 30 years.
Clinical Psychologists— must hold a Master’s degree in the field.
Health Informatics— must hold a Master’s degree in the field.
Holders of Bachelor of Science in Health Information.
Biomedical Engineers:
Bachelor’s Degree holders.
Diploma holders.
Holders of Certificate in Pathology/Mortuary techniques.
Health Records and Information Management Personnel — must hold a Diploma in the field and be aged below 28 years.
LEGAL PRACTITIONERS – AGED 30 YEARS AND BELOW
Applicants must be Advocates of the High Court of Uganda and Subordinate Courts, with a minimum of five (05) years of legal practice.
GRADUATE TEACHERS, AGED 23-30 YEARS
Secondary School Teachers holding Bachelor’s Degree in Sciences with Education, possessing valid teacher’s registration certificates from the Ministry of Education and Sports. The required teaching combination subjects are Biology/Chemistry, Physics/Mathematics, Physics/Chemistry, Chemistry/Mathematics, Physics/ICT, Biology, Physical Education.
Primary School Teachers with a Bachelor’s Degree in Primary Education.
SPORTS PERSONNEL, AGED 18-30 YEARS
Talented sportsmen and women are encouraged to apply. Minimum education requirement is Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE). Having participated in any nationally organized sports event with evidence will be an added advantage.
