The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has released the 2024 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examination results, showing a mixed performance across subjects.
During the presentation of the results at State hose Nakasero the UNEB Executive Secretary, Dan Odongo, said that there is a significant improvement in performance by candidates in the subjects of economics, literature in English, physics, and biology while the subjects of Entrepreneurship Education, Christian Religious Education, Geography, Mathematics, Agriculture, and Chemistry they noticed a slight decrease in performance.
He stated that grades for the Science subjects have continued to be much lower than for Humanities, which are better done.
He narrated that problems continue to be poor interpretation of questions due to misunderstanding of the key concepts that determine the expected responses in the subjects of Humanities.
Odongo said that a total of 142,009 candidates registered for the 2024 the Uganda Advanced Certificate Examinations, representing a 28.4% increase from 110,566 in 2023
Odongo noted that 98.8% of candidates qualified for the UACE award, with 65.5% passing with at least two principal passes.
He narrated that University admissions to degree courses consider two principal level passes as a minimum requirement noting that if the consideration is maintained, 92,273, or 65.5%, will qualify to be admitted, compared to 81,816, or 73.8%, in 2023.”
Odongo recommended that schools focus on improving syllabus coverage, practical skills, and mathematical skills to enhance candidate performance.
He said that results from 38 centers out of the 2,255 centers will be withheld, pending completion of investigations, however, cases of malpractice at this level have remained low.
Odongo, said that the Board has observed over the years, female candidates, although fewer in number than the male candidates, have performed comparably better than their male counterparts.
“The percentage passes at the upper levels (3P and 2P) are higher, while percentage passes at the lower levels and failure rate among female candidates are lower than for the males”. Odongo said.
He noted that the 2024 UACE results show a mixed performance, with improvements in some subjects and declines in others. The increase in candidature and female performance is notable, while the low numbers in STEM subjects remain a concern.
