Top army officers trust me, says Muntu as he assures Ugandans Museveni exit won’t lead to insecurity

Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential candidate Maj Gen (Rtd) Gregg Mugisha Muntu has assured Ugandans the country won’t descend into chaos and insecurity once when long-serving President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni is removed from power.

Maj Gen (Rtd) Muntu is a former army commander in the Museveni government.

He fell out with Museveni, his bush war comrade, about two decades ago.

The general is making his first attempt at the country’s top seat.

With Uganda’s history of violent transitions, some people are afraid Museveni’s exit could throw the country into chaos and bloodshed.

But Muntu has assured Ugandans Museveni’s removal won’t lead to insecurity as some members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) have severally argued.

“The NRM people keep telling you that if Museveni and NRM go you will get insecurity. The regime should not intimidate you with threats of insecurity,” said Muntu during a campaign meeting in Serere on December 09.

The former bush war fighter also claimed he had considerable support among the national army, with some top officials approving of his credentials.

“We also have a military background. The officers, especially those whom I served with – some still in, others out, know my capability,” claimed Muntu.

“Should you choose us as ANT, don’t worry about security; we’ll ensure that even the insecurity that we have now will be stamped out.”

Muntu is one of the 10 opposition candidates seeking to end Museveni’s rule.

The others are Patrick Oboi Amuriat (POA) of main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) – who defeated Muntu in the party presidency election before the ex-army commander quit to start ANT,  former security minister Lt Gen (Rtd) Henry Kakurugu Tumukunde,  Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine of National Unity Platform (NUP), Norbert Mao of Democratic Party (DP), Joseph Kiiza Kabuleta, John Katumba, Willy Mayambala, Fred Mwesigye and Nancy Kalembe.
