At least three people were killed after a woman allegedly set fire on market stalls to harm a co-wife.
Rwizi regional police spokesperson Samson Kasasira says officers in Isingiro District are investigating a case of murder by arson and arson that occurred on August 06, 2025 at about 0230/c.
The incident happened in Rugaaga cell, Kyampango Ward of Rugaaga Town Council in Isingiro District.
Police suspect that a woman might have started the fire after a quarrel with a co-wife.
“It’s alleged that on 05/08/2025 at about 1500/c at Rugaaga matooke market two ladies picked a strong quarrel over a man by names of Hamimu Masegere due to the fact that he had the first wife called Kyarikunda Annette but after they developed misunderstandings, he married another one by names of Kirabo Caroline,” noted Kasasira.
“Later on the first wife left the home but while threatening to harm the co-wife.”
A fire would later break out at a market harming one of the women’s stalls.
“Then on 06/08/2025 at about 0230/c fire broke out at Rugaaga market and burnt over ten rooms made out of wood including the room where Kirabo Caroline was staying and burnt properties including a motorbike (tuku tuku) reg no UEU 559G.”
Locals were unable to put out the fire, leaving it to damage properties and kill people.
“Neighbors and other first responders attempted to put out the fire but were overwhelmed and they decided to come to police to report the incident,” noted Kasasira.
“Police officers responded to the report and rushed to the scene worked with the local residents to put out the fire.”
At least three people were confirmed dead.
“Three dead bodies suspected to be of street children who were residing within the burnt stalls were found in the rubble and are yet to be identified,” confirmed Kasasira.
The regional police spokesperson has also revealed Kyarikunda and Kirabo were arrested to help in the investigations.
