Police in Bwizibwera, Mbarara District, say a shamba boy has confessed that he was paid Shs100,000 to kill a woman.
On May 24, 2025, residents of Akatooma Cell in Bwizibwera-Rutooma Town Council, Mbarara District woke up to news of the murder of Ritah Akankunda in her home.
It is said that Akankunda, who was 30 years old, was at home with her shamba boy Javira Byamukama and sister-in-law Winnie Kembabazi Kabaare, around the time the incident happened.
Her husband, Fred Kabaare, had gone to work in Bwizibwera Town.
Following the murder, a police sniffer dog led detectives to the home of Byamukama, aged 19.
Police then arrested Byamukama, the shamba boy, and Kabaare, aged about 30.
Mbarara District Police Commander SP Benon Byamukama said that the shamba boy had confessed to killing Akankunda, and that Kembabazi had reportedly paid him Shs100,000 to kill Akankunda.
Police transported Akankunda’s body to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem. The suspects are expected in court when the investigations into the murder that shook Bwizibwera town is complete.
