TABLES SHAKEN! Trouble for Men as Feminist Lawyers Push for Law Requiring Husbands to Pay Wives Monthly Salaries on top of Kameeza Money

Men in the East African Community (EAC) might soon been in trouble after feminist lawyers demanded a law to force men to pay them monthly salaries.

While men have been complaining about the money they leave home for food and other needs, commonly termed ‘Kameeza’ money or tax, they may have to tighten their belts for a possibility of a law that will require them to pay their wives salaries.

This was one of the resolution in a hybrid — virtual and physical — meeting of feminist lawyers from the region.

Meeting at Mestil Hotel in Kampala on November 26, the feminists resolved to push for a law requiring husbands to compensate their wives for the family chores they do.

These feminist laywers included, Patricia Bigirwa Twasiima of Segal Family Foundation. Bigirwa’s argument is that even when Covid19 has negatively affected both gender, women who have been rendered jobless have been left with no option but to do family chores for which they should now be compensated.

Kenyan lawyer Esther Amati argued that with laws, such as one in the pipeline in her home country, women will be able to earn some money to help them buy property.

“Most women cannot contribute to the economic development of their countries because they spend many hours at home doing unpaid work. This is the reason the majority of women don’t own properties because they don’t earn a penny,” said Amati.
