Stop serving Museveni’s interests & stand with Ugandans: Bobi Wine challenges Speaker Kadaga, MPs in first statement in Parliament after elections

Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has made his first statement before Parliament in four months, urging the House to redeem its image by serving the interests of Ugandans, not President Museveni.

Bobi Wine returned to Parliament on Wednesday after four months of political activity.

He was one of the 11 presidential candidates in the 2021 race.

He polled 35 per cent of the votes to come second after incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni who won the election with 58 per cent.

Bobi Wine had challenged Museveni’s reelection in the Supreme Court but withdrew his petition over alleged bias on the side of the judges.

He has since called on his supporters — the so-called public court — to engage in peaceful protests.

The singer-turned-politician recently claimed he had won the election with 54 per cent.

Today, during parliament’s plenary, Bobi Wine made a statement, highlighting challenges experienced before, during and after the 2021 elections.

“Madam Speaker, I am addressing this Parliament for the first time since the 14th January Presidential Elections, which were marred by massive rigging. The campaigns were filled with unprecedented levels of state inspired violence and brutality,” said Bobi Wine.

“As we comfortably sit in this House, I want to remind all of us that Ugandans are being abducted on a daily basis by security operatives in notorious vans called ‘drones.’ They are being held in unknown detention centers, in Military Barracks and unknown torture chambers across the country.”

He further claimed that “many of our supporters were murdered, many were maimed, while other sustained grave injuries. That happened before, during and after the election.”

“Ugandans demand for the unconditional release of the people in detention. This Parliament should stand with the people of Uganda.”

He then told the speaker and MPs to redeem the image of Parliament and serve Ugandans’ interests.

“Government Institutions have been reduced to serving the interests of an individual, instead of serving the people. This Parliament therefore has the opportunity to present image/itself to the people of Uganda, as a Parliament that has the Interest of the people of Uganda.”
