‘Some NRM MPs Pushing for Trial of Civilians in Military Courts Will Be Victims of the Same Law’

Ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) MPs pushing for the trial of civilians of in military courts as provided for in the UPDF Amendment Bill 2025 might be some of its victims, a political analyst has warned.
On May 13, 2025, Defence and Veteran Affairs minister Jacob Oboth Oboth tabled the UPDF Amendment Bill 2025 before Parliament.
Speaker Anita Among referred the bill to the joint committee on legal and defence affairs for scrutiny.
Although the UPDF Amendment Bill 2025 is unpopular among members of the political opposition who look at it as another persecution tool, it is widely expected that the bill will sail through when it comes to the House for a vote.
The ruling NRM party has a comfortable majority in the House over which national chairman Gen Yoweri Museveni holds great power and influence.
Most of these NRM MPs are expected to vote in favour of the bill.
It should be remembered that weeks ago, each NRM MP got Shs100m – part of which money was thought to have been meant to soften the hearts of the MPs to vote in favour of the government position in the bill. (See Details Here, Thereand Over There).
But veteran journalist and political commentator Andrew Mwenda has warned that them that they, too, could be victims of the piece of legislation – and that they may regret their actions in future.
“Please be very careful, you may be passing a law that will catch up with you,” warned Mwenda as he appeared on NBS Frontline on the night of Thursday, May 15, 2025.
“There is one aspect of that bill that we are challenging, and I disagree with it, that civilians should be tried in a court martial, that if I wear a navy blue Kaunda suit I should be tried in a court martial.”

It should be remembered that even some Kaunda suits could land civilians in trouble with Museveni military courts if the UPDF Bill is passed into law. (See Details Here).
