Ugandan novelist Kakwenza Rukirabashaija recently fled Uganda through the Rwandan border.
A few hours later, first son Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba called President Paul Kagame of Rwanda to inquire about the whereabouts of Rukirabashaija (Read Story Here).
Now expected in Europe for treatment, the novelist has no Ugandan passport after depositing it at Buganda Road Court as a precondition for his bail.
Yet he has been able to cross through many other countries.
First, it didn’t appear like Rukirabashaija had any plans of fleeing Uganda – aware of the consequences and given that he had asked court to dismiss charges against him.
It has now emerged that the 33-year-old novelist took advantage of the porous Uganda-Rwanda borders to flee Uganda after he used road transport means to leave Kampala.
Once in Rwanda, he also used road transport means and was undetected by security there.
At the Rwanda-Burundi border, Rukirabashaija said he was a refugee.
Using his South African passport, which he acquired during his previous stay in South Africa, Rukirabashaija headed to the Bujumbura International Airport and flew to Malawi.
His plan was to fly from Malawi to Johannesburg, before heading to Europe.
He is expected to fly to any of these four countries: Germany, Denmark, Canada, USA.
