KAMPALA — Fresh concerns have emerged over the health of veteran opposition leader Kizza Besigye after senior leaders of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) revealed that he remains in a critical condition, unable to speak and receiving nutrition through feeding tubes.

In an update on Dr Besigye’s condition, Doreen Nyanjura, the Head of Special Interests at the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), painted a grim picture of the four-time presidential candidate’s health.

“… Besigye is feeding through tubes and cannot even speak,” Nyanjura said, underscoring the seriousness of his condition.

In her latest update, Winnie Byanyima, Dr Besigye’s spouse, indicated that although there had been slight improvement, the opposition veteran remained in a fragile state.

According to Byanyima, Dr Besigye was only partially conscious on Thursday and was still unable to communicate verbally.

“Yesterday [on Thursday], Dr Kizza Besigye was only partially conscious. He could hear but could not speak. He remains extremely weak. Doctors are still trying to determine what happened to him,” Byanyima said.

The latest updates have intensified anxiety among supporters and political leaders, many of whom have been closely following developments since Dr Besigye was admitted to the intensive care unit at Mulago National Referral Hospital after collapsing during court proceedings earlier this week.

His hospitalization has sparked renewed debate over the circumstances surrounding his detention, treatment and access to medical care, with opposition leaders demanding a full explanation of the events that preceded his collapse.

Medical personnel have not yet issued a comprehensive public report on the exact cause of his condition, although Byanyima said doctors are continuing investigations.

Dr Besigye remains under close medical observation as Ugandans await further updates on his recovery.
