President Yoweri Museveni.
The Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) has insisted that only President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni will make the official announcement on the reopening of schools.
According to MoES spokesperson Dr Dennis Mugimba, President Museveni will update the nation on the reopening plan for education institutions after consulting his cabinet.
Responding to reports that schools would reopen their gates to some classes in the next two weeks, Dr Mugimba made it clear that MoES had no authority to decide on reopening.
“It is only President Museveni that can announce when to open,” Dr Mugimba told reporters at the Uganda Media Center on September 02.
“The date of reopening schools that has been on social media did not come from the Ministry of Education and Sports.”
Education minister Janet Kataaha Museveni is expected to brief cabinet on resolutions from an education stakeholders meeting held recently.
Cabinet will then make recommendations on the reopening date and guidelines for the education institutions to the president.
Museveni will then make a final decision and announce the same in an address to the nation.
