First lady and education minister Janet Museveni.
First lady Janet Kataaha Museveni’s Ministry of Education and Sports has once again distanced itself from reports that school reopening would happen in the next two weeks.
An August 30 meeting of education sector stakeholders agreed to reopen school gates to Primary One, Primary Two, Primary Three, Senior One and Senior Two classes.
Although sources that attended the meeting have revealed that the reopening could happen as soon as September 09, Education Ministry spokesperson Dr Dennis Mugimba has dismissed the reports.
“Please note that the information on dates of reopening of schools did not come from the Ministry of Education and Sports,” said Dr Mugimba on September 02 in Kampala.
Mugimba further made it clear that the reopening of education institutions would not only depend on vaccination of teachers, non-teaching staff and students above the age of 18.
“There are other things to consider,” he said.
He explained that the Ministry would work with other ministries such as that of health whose reports of rate of community transmission is key in determining whether to open up.
Mugimba went on to emphasize that only President Museveni would make the announcement on school reopening dates.
