A popular Ugandan musician and comedian has died in the United States of America. Nicholas Mpiirwe was popularly known as DJ Messe Bontwe.
He was a co-founder of the Amarula Family comedy group. Established in 1999, Amarula Family is one of the country’s best comedy outfits.
Its other cofounders were the late Paddy Bitama and Amooti Omubalanguzi, who still leads the group, recruiting young members and mentoring them in the craft.
DJ Messe Bontwe was also a musician. He was better known for his hit song Bamusakatta, in which he teamed up with Ragga Dee under the Hommies Band. Born in Mbarara in 1976, DJ Messe Bontwe dropped out of school to work as a cashier at her aunt’s video library.
Besides comedy and music, DJ Messe Bontwe also worked as a radio presenter.
By the time of his death, DJ Messe Bontwe was living and working in the US.
The death of DJ Messe Bontwe happened a day before Amooti Omubalanguzi’s scheduled show dubbed 25 Years of Amooti, which is happening on December 13, 2024 at the UMA Show Grounds.
