SAD! 14 People Killed in Lwera Accident. All Taxi Occupants Dead

Fourteen people have been killed in a horrific road crash in Lwera Swamp, Kalungu District, after a Toyota Hiace taxi collided with a sand-carrying truck along the busy Kampala–Masaka Highway.

The fatal crash occurred on the night of Monday, August 3, 2026, at around 11:00pm at Kamunga Trading Centre in Lwera Swamp, according to police.

All the victims who died were occupants of the taxi, police confirmed.

Twaha Kasirye, the Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson, said the crash involved a Toyota Hiace taxi registration number UA 662AQ and a Sino truck registration number UBS 040F that was transporting sand.

“In the night of 03 August, 2026 at around 2300hrs, we registered a fatal road crash in Lwera Swamp, Kamunga Trading Centre, along the Kampala–Masaka Highway,” Kasirye said.

“The accident involved a Toyota Hiace taxi (UA 662AQ) and a Sino truck (UBS 040F) transporting sand,” he added.

Kasirye confirmed the heavy death toll, saying, “Fourteen (14) people died on the spot, all from the taxi.”

The police spokesperson further revealed that four other people sustained injuries and were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention.

“Four injured victims, two from each vehicle, are admitted at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital,” Kasirye said.

Police officers visited the scene of the crash as investigations into the cause of the accident commenced.

“Police visited the scene and investigations are underway,” Kasirye said.

He added that authorities were also pursuing the driver of the truck, who reportedly fled after the crash.

“Efforts to trace the fleeing driver are ongoing,” the police spokesperson stated.

The Kampala–Masaka Highway has over the years recorded several fatal crashes, with authorities repeatedly warning motorists about reckless driving, speeding, poor vehicle maintenance and dangerous overtaking.

The latest accident adds to the growing number of road fatalities reported on Uganda’s major highways, raising renewed concerns about road safety enforcement and passenger transport regulations.
