R.I.P! Prof George W Kanyeihamba Dead

Justice (Rtd) Prof George W Kanyeihamba is dead. Kanyeihamba served as a Supreme Court Judge from 1997 to 2009.

Kanyeihamba died on Monday morning at Nakasero Hospital in the capital Kampala. 

“With deep soul, we announce the passing on of our (Digitalk TV) patron Prof. GW Kanyeihamba, which occurred today, July 14, 2025, Monday morning at Nakasero Hospital. More information is to be communicated,” said The Alternative Uganda where he was patron for Digitalk TV.

George W Kanyeihamba was a Ugandan author, a retired supreme court Judge, former cabinet minister, member of parliament and was a chair of the Legal Committee of the Constituent Assembly that made the 1995 Constitution.

In 1997, President Museveni appointed Kanyeihamba a member of the Supreme Court of Uganda in 1997. Kanyeihamba was one of the three supreme court justices who voted to nullify Museveni’s 2006 reelection victory.

Kanyeihamba retired in November 2009.

He had also served as a minister in Museveni’s cabinet in dockets like commerce, and justice.

Kanyeihamba also had opportunity to serve as attorney general.

Born on 11 August 1939 in Kinaba, Kinkizi District, Kigezi Region, Kanyeihamba was the last born and eleventh child of Zakaliya Bafwokworora and Kyenda Malyamu Kyakundwa.

He went to Hamurwa Church School, Nyaruhanga Anglican Church Primary School, Nyakatare Church School, Kigezi High School, Busoga College Mwiri, and Norwich City College.

Kanyeihamba then earned a Bachelor of Laws from Portsmouth University in the 1970s.

He held a PhD in law from the University of Warwick.

Besides his Supreme Court work and criticism of the Museveni regime, Kanyeihamba served as chancellor of Kampala International University and Kabale University.

Days before his death, a city lawyer had been sent to prison for reportedly stealing over Shs200m from him. (See Details Here).
