The Tooro Kingdom has spoken about the health of its monarch, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, confirming that the 34-year-old King is in critical condition and calling for prayers from his subjects and well-wishers around the world.
The announcement came on Thursday, August 27, 2026, from Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister or Omuhikirwa Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who issued an official statement as anxiety mounted over the condition of the King.
Rwomiire, addressing the public through a statement shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, appealed for unity and restraint while confirming the seriousness of the situation.
“This is to inform you that His Majesty King Oyo is currently in a critical condition,” read the statement.
“At this difficult and deeply concerning time, we humbly ask the people of Tooro, our friends and well-wishers in Uganda and across the world to keep His Majesty in their thoughts and prayers.”
The kingdom has not provided details about the illness affecting the monarch. It has also not revealed where the King is currently receiving medical attention.
With limited official information available, the Prime Minister cautioned the public against filling the information gap with rumours, speculation or reports from unofficial sources.
“We equally appeal to everyone to refrain from speculation, rumours or sharing unverified information regarding His Majesty’s condition,” he said. “We understand the concern and anxiety that news of this nature will naturally cause, but we ask for calm, restraint and respect for His Majesty and the Royal Family. The official channels of Tooro Kingdom will provide updates as and when appropriate. For now, we ask that we stand together in prayer for His Majesty.”
The statement effectively placed the Royal Family’s health crisis under the management of the kingdom’s official communication channels, with the public urged to wait for verified updates.
King Oyo has occupied the Tooro throne for more than 30 years, having inherited the cultural institution following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, in September 1995.
His accession was extraordinary even by royal standards. Crowned when he was only three years old, Oyo became the world’s youngest reigning monarch and has since grown into one of Uganda’s most prominent traditional leaders.
His reign has spanned more than three decades, during which the Tooro monarchy has remained an important cultural institution in western Uganda.
But on Thursday, the kingdom’s focus shifted from the monarch’s long reign to his immediate wellbeing.
Officials have kept silent about the nature of his illness and his location, saying further information will be released when appropriate.
For Tooro subjects, the immediate appeal is therefore simple: remain calm, respect the privacy of the King and Royal Family, and pray for the monarch as his medical team attends to him.
