Obukama bwa Tooro (Tooro Kingdom) has clarified that King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV is currently outside Uganda for official engagements and academic pursuits, dismissing reports that the monarch was rushed to the United States for medical treatment.
The clarification follows speculation on social media suggesting that the Omukama had travelled to the US after allegedly falling ill and being admitted to a hospital.
The Kingdom said the reports were inaccurate, explaining that the Tooro monarch’s trip is part of his official responsibilities and personal development through further education.
“He [Omukama Oyo] is currently abroad for official duty and to further his studies,” Obukama bwa Tooro said.
The Kingdom urged the public to rely on official communication channels regarding the activities, health, and whereabouts of the Omukama, instead of unverified information circulating online.
Omukama Oyo, 34, became the 12th King of Tooro in 1995 following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. He was only three years old at the time of his coronation, making him one of the youngest monarchs in modern history.
For several years after ascending the throne, the young King ruled under the guidance of a regency council as he grew up and pursued his education. He later assumed full royal responsibilities and has since represented Tooro Kingdom at national and international engagements.
The Tooro Kingdom, one of Uganda’s traditional institutions, traces its roots to the 19th century and represents the cultural identity of the Batooro people in western Uganda. The Kingdom’s headquarters are located at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City, Kabarole District.
Although traditional leaders in Uganda do not exercise political authority, kingdoms such as Tooro play a significant cultural role through the preservation of heritage, promotion of development initiatives, and promotion of unity among their subjects.
Omukama Oyo has in recent years focused on youth empowerment, tourism promotion, environmental conservation, and strengthening Tooro’s cultural institutions while continuing his academic journey.
