As the race for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda intensifies, political tensions are spilling over into the non-profit sector. Pilgrim Africa, a respected faith-based organization known for its contributions to education, healthcare, and agriculture, is now caught in the crossfire of what many believe is a politically motivated smear campaign.
A recent write-up published by a gutter tabloid calling itself Free Man News alleges that Pilgrim Africa is under investigation for financial misconduct by authorities in both Uganda and the United States.
The report references a supposed court case filed in Uganda’s High Court under the number MC-14-2025. However, when approached for comment, representatives from Pilgrim Africa denied any knowledge of such proceedings or investigations.
“To the best of our knowledge, there is no case or investigation,” a spokesperson for the organization stated. “We continue to operate with transparency and integrity in all our partnerships, both in Uganda and internationally.”
The gutter tabloid behind the allegations is reportedly managed by a blogger with ties to Capt Mike Mukula, the incumbent NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda.
Mukula is currently being challenged for the position by Calvin Echodu, who is closely associated with Pilgrim Africa having previously served as a top administrator at the organization. This connection has led many to believe that the article is part of a deliberate political effort to undermine Echodu’s credibility by targeting an organization linked to him.

Observers suggest that the attack on Pilgrim Africa may be part of a broader strategy to derail Echodu’s campaign. The organization, which has long enjoyed a positive reputation and strong local and international support, has never previously faced public scandal.
“This goes beyond just one candidate or organization,” noted a political analyst asking not to be dragged in the crossfire. “It raises deeper concerns about the misuse of media and power to influence political outcomes. If we allow such tactics to go unchecked, it threatens the integrity of our democratic processes.”
As of now, no tangible evidence has emerged to support the allegations against Pilgrim Africa. There are no public court records confirming the mentioned case, nor has any formal investigation been verified.
Despite the controversy, Pilgrim Africa continues its operations without interruption, remaining committed to its mission in the face of growing political noise.
What’s becoming increasingly evident is that the contest for the NRM Vice Chairperson role in Eastern Uganda is becoming fiercely contested—and potentially damaging. The involvement of nonpartisan organizations like Pilgrim Africa in political mudslinging highlights the lengths to which some actors may go to maintain influence and control.
Mukula was yet to respond to the allegations of using a gutter tabloid to get at his opponent Echodu.
