A Makerere University third year student has succumbed to injuries after a mob beat him up near Lumumba Hall days ago.
Police has identified the deceased as Emmanuel Tegu, a veterinary student.
The incident happened on the night of June 28, noted Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson.
“At around 11pm last Sunday, police received information from someone that there was a mob action taking place near Lumumba Hall in Makerere University,” explained Onyango.
“The caller said a gathering was beating a suspected thief. The police officers went to the scene and they found unidentified person unconscious and lying on the ground with several injuries.”
While Tegu fought for his life at Mulago Hospital in Kampala, police says it recorded statements from police officers who responded to the distress call and other witnesses.
“Unfortunately, the victim has passed on today at 3am before he could record a statement to give us his last moments,” regretted Onyango.
“We are yet to find out the reason why he was moving at night at that time, but a murder offence is being vigorously investigated.”
He also dismissed reports that it was LDUs that killed Tegu after they found him praying.
“No single LDU [guard] is deployed at Makerere University. The security of the university is being managed by Police and private security firms,” he said.
“We condemn mob action and any person found to have participated in the crime will be arrested and prosecuted for taking the law in their own hands.”
