Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng has announced her intention to contest for the Lira Woman MP seat.
Aceng says she has for years received calls from the people of Lango to vie for a parliamentary seat.
In her video announcement on July 05, Aceng said she would contest under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket.“
I want to declare openly that I am taking up a political position as a representative of the Women in Lira district,” Aceng said.
“I will contest for the position under the Movement ticket.”
This means that Aceng will first seek the party’s flag in NRM primaries.
Joy Atim Ongom of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) is the current MP.
Aceng, 52 served as the Director General of Health Services and director of Lira Regional Referral Hospital before her elevation to head the Ministry of Health (MoH).
She added that the people of Lango had shown her “their great Love and support” while she worked at Lira.“The people of this area prayed for me when I worked there for over 15 years. We lived among them and they loved us,” she said.
“They gave me blessings when the president picked me as Director General of Health Services.”
The minister was confident she had “not let the people of Lango down.”
“The work I have been doing has pleased them and that is why they have been asking questions and encouraging me.”
