PM NABBANJA 1-0 SPEAKER AMONG: Prime Minister Nabbanja CLEARS Nyege Nyege Festival; Throws Speaker Anita Among’s Orders in Dustbin

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has overruled Anita Annet Among, the Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, clearing the controversial 2022 edition of the Nyege Nyege Festival.

The decision to clear Nyege Nyege Festival, which is expected to begin next week at the Itanda Falls, was made reached during a meeting that Prime Minister Nabbanja held with at least five ministers.

The ministries represented at the 08:30am meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala included: Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development as well as Minister of Ethics and Integrity.

The meeting followed orders issued by Speaker Anita Among banning the Nyege Nyege Festival over immorality concerns.

Now, reports indicate that the meeting resolved that Nyege Nyege Festival should go on as had been planned.

The ministers also resolved that there should be sufficient deployment of police to ensure that there is order at the event that will take place at the Itanda Falls next week.

What this decision means is that Speaker Among’s and Parliament’s directives have been overruled by the Prime Minister, a senior member of the executive arm of government.

Among is expected to chair today’s plenary in the afternoon. It is not clear what her reaction will be.

According to Speaker Among and other MPs, Nyege Nyege Festival is a hub of immorality that should not be allowed to take place. (Read Story Here).

It should be remembered that hours after Speaker Among issued the orders, the spokesperson of Museveni’s government rebuked her, making it clear that she and her Parliament did not have powers to cancel Nyege Nyege Festival. (Read Story Here).
