Omuhikirwa Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire and Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I
FORT PORTAL — October 5, 2026: Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I has begun reshaping the administration of the Tooro Kingdom, appointing an interim leadership team to guide the institution through the first six months of his reign.
The appointments were announced on Monday, October 5, by Paul Nyakaana Businge, the Principal Private Secretary and spokesperson for the Omukama.
Among the key decisions, Nyabongo I re-appointed Owek. Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki as Acting Omuhikirwa, or Prime Minister, for a six-month transitional period.
Rwomiire’s appointment is intended to facilitate the transition as the new monarch establishes his administration and begins organising the affairs of the kingdom.
The Omukama also retained Omubiito Charles Kayondo Kamurasi Akiiki as Mujwera Musuuga of Tooro Kingdom.
Omubiito Kato Rwakatale has likewise been retained as deputy Musuuga.
The appointments maintain key figures in the kingdom’s existing administrative structure while Nyabongo I establishes his own team following his accession to the Tooro throne.
Alongside the leadership appointments, Nyabongo I has appointed an 11-member interim Advisory Committee to support him during the transitional period.
The committee will provide counsel to the Omukama on matters concerning the kingdom as the new administration takes shape.
The members of the committee include Erisa Kakyomya, Hon. Bernard Tungakwo, Chris Kaijuka, Kasojo Binta Rosalia Achaali, Hon. William Byaruhanga and Hon. Peace Mutuuzo.
Others are Msgr. Isaiah Mayombo, Abdullah Mangaali, Flavia Kabahenda Rwabuhoro, Hon. Aston Kajara and Monica Rubombora.
The appointments mark one of the first major administrative steps by Nyabongo I since he was installed as the new Omukama of Tooro.
The six-month transitional arrangement places Rwomiire at the centre of the kingdom’s day-to-day administration while the advisory committee provides the new monarch with a broader group of senior figures to consult during the transition.
Nyabongo I, who was previously known as Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, was selected by the Tooro Royal Succession Committee in September following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
His selection brought to an end the succession process that followed Oyo’s death and set the stage for the establishment of a new royal administration.
