NO MORE JOKES: Fearless Ugandan Sent to Prison for Disturbing Speaker Anita Among’s Peace on Twitter

A fearless Uganda has been arrested, arraigned in a court of law and sent to jail on remand after he sent out a tweet that is said to have disturbed the peace of Bukedea District Woman MP and Speaker of Parliament of the Republic Anita Annet Among.

While John Sentamu, who is 26 years of age, has thought that the post published on micro-blogging site Twitter was a joke, the tweet reportedly angered Speaker Among, the third most important politician and official in the Ugandan government, only below President Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni and his Vice President Maj (Rtd) Jessica Alupo Abeine, according to the Uganda National Order of Precedence.

Sentamu, who goes by the pseudonym   and tweets via his official Twitter handle @JohnKelton5, is said to have got into trouble with Speaker Among over a tweet that was reportedly related to her visit to the Vatican where she met and held discussions with the pope, the head of the Catholic Church in the world.

The tweet by Sentamu, which must not be reproduced here for obvious reasons, went viral on the internet, with a screenshot of the same shared across several social media platforms.

Sentamu aka Kelly Slender is a shop keeper. It is reported that operatives driving a ‘drone’ vehicle arrested him from his shop weeks ago, on August 30 to be exact, after the tweet was retweeted and shared by thousands of social media users.

He faces offensive communication charges for using his Twitter account to disturb Anita Among’s peace without any purpose of conveying legitimate communication.

He had been missing until his lawyer Jeremiah Keeya Mwanje and family members finally learnt that he was being held at the Kireka-based Special Investigation Unit (SIU).

He appeared before Buganda Road Court on October 18 but the presiding magistrate remanded him to Luzira Prison until October 27 when he will return to the temple of justice for mention of his case and for a possible hearing of his bail application.

In recent months, a number of people, including Bobi Wine’s NUP youths, have been arrested and detained over their tweets. A one Motiv Bashir Kasagga recently returned from prison and detention at the Mbuya-based Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) for celebrating the death of former security minister Gen Elly Tumwine. Motiv Kasagga has since narrated his shocking experience under CMI detention, including being denied food for three days and being beaten. (Read Shocking Details Here).
