Main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya has alleged that ‘Nalukoola ruling’ sets a bad precedent, and that President Yoweri Museveni’s regime could exploit it to steal opposition victories in elections — including in 2026 — especially in places where the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is weak.Â
On May 26, a High Court judge nullified the election of Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi as Kawempe North MP and ordered a fresh election.

Reacting to the judgement, which has clearly shocked many in the opposition, Rubongoya said expressed worry that the Museveni regime could not hire goons to disrupt elections in opposition strongholds so that this can be used as a basis for nullification of victories.
In his view, Rubongoya suspects that the NRM could use the Kawempe North model for areas in which it is certain it can neither win nor rig.
On the allegations of rigging, even Museveni has previously accused Bobi Wine and his NUP of stealing his votes in Buganda, as reported Here and There.
Describing the ruling as emblematic of “infamy,” Rubongoya hopes the Court of Appeal can correct the “absurd decision” of Justice Bernard Namanya.
“A day of infamy!!! So judge Bernard Namanya has nullified the election of comrade Hon. Nalukoola Erias Luyimbazi claiming that he campaigned on election day and that elections were disrupted at 14 polling stations!” Rubongoya reacted to the ruling.Â
“Meaning that henceforth, the regime can deploy goons to disrupt elections in areas where they know they can’t rig or win. Hopefully the Court of Appeal will overturn this absurd decision!”
