Police have confirmed the arrest of Eva Mbabazi, the hitherto mysterious woman linked to the sudden death of Dr John Spire Kiggundu, brother to academic and activist Dr Jimmy Spire Ssentongo.
Dr Spire Kiggundu died after an hour of checking into Dream Guest House in Lubowa along Entebbe Road on June 21, 2025.
It is said that Dr Spire Kiggundu checked into Dream Guest House at about 5:45 PM only to be found dead within the next hour.
It is said that closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage obtained from the guest house indicated that a woman, now believed to have been Eva Mbabazi, was seen leaving the same room that Dr Spire Kiggundu had booked.
Believed to have been the last person that Dr Spire Kiggundu saw or interacted with, Eva Mbabazi became a person of interest for investigators.
Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson Patrick Onyango has been quoted as saying that police have arrested Eva Mbabazi after some days of efforts to nab her.
“We have been looking for her and finally this week we arrested her and brought her in,” Onyango was quoted as saying. “She has been cooperative, and she gave us all the information which we wanted. We recorded her statement.”
A state attorney assigned to the case is expected to advise on whether Eva Mbabazi had a role in Dr Spire Kiggundu’s death and if the state should slap charges against her.
“We forwarded the file to the state Attorney for perusal and legal advise. Since this was a general inquiry file, we did not attach a charge sheet,” Onyango was further quoted as saying.
“We wanted the state attorney to guide us on whether she has a case to answer and what charge we should file.”
