President Yoweri Museveni has been nominated for two key political positions: the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential flag bearer 2026, and the party’s national chairman,
Museveni was nominated at the NRM party headquarters based at Kyadondo in the capital Kampala.
Dr. Tanga Odoi, the party’s Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson, said Museveni was the sole candidate for the two positions.
Before Museveni picked nomination forms, up to 2254 other candidates had been nominated for various positions such as MPs and district chairpersons.
Up to 16 candidates of those candidates are unopposed within the NRM.
First lady Janet Museveni accompanied her husband as he went to be nominated for the seventh elective term.
Vice President Jessica Alupo, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, deputy speaker Thomas Tayebwa were also present as the 80-year-old got nominated.
The Tanga Odoi commission verified President Museveni’s credentials.
After being nominated, Museveni warned against bribery, and personality politics.
“Remember when the NRM came to government it gave you the power to elect people, and leaders at all levels. You have just elected the NRM structures. You are going to elect the national ones. Now, when you elect, they should be your overseers in each area,” said the president and NRM boss.
“Don’t accept any money from anybody to elect him or her. Elect one if he or she can be a good overseer.
“Now, in order to stabilise our politics, avoid politics of personality. Me me me..! It is not you, because you alone cannot do much.
“You as an individual, you’re nothing. Even if you’re very brilliant, even if you are what, there is nothing you can do as an individual. What you need to know and respect is the party, the Force, the army (UPDF), it is what can help you do whatever you want to do. So, the people who waste a lot of time me me me…you should really stop because they divert us.”
Museveni then delved into what informed his decision to run for another term of office.
He said that during his Parish Development Model (PDM) tours across the country, resolutions had been passed calling on him to run for another term.
Museveni said he wanted to push Ugandans forward for another five-year term.
“I thank the NRM fraternity because when I have been going upcountry for PDM, everywhere in public meetings, there have been resolutions passed, and petitions signed requesting me to offer myself to be the chairman of the NRM again,” he said.
“I have decided to come forward and see how to escort the ‘bazzukulu’ [grandchildren], and their parents, forward for another five years.”
His plans for the next five years? Museveni says he wants to deal corruption a blow.
“In this coming term, I want us really to wipe out corruption because this corruption should not be there because we are in charge,” he said.
“In the coming ‘kisanja’ [term], let us make sure we get rid of corruption so that we get maximum value from the money we have in the country.”
