Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has accused Kenyan MP Babu Owino for working with opposition groups keen on ending the rule of his National Resistance Movement (NRM) party and government.
Museveni openly accused Babu Owino, the Embakasi East MP, in front of three other presidents from the East African region: William Ruto of Kenya, Salva Kiir of South Sudan, and Samia Suluhu of Tanzania.
The four presidents were in Kenya for the endorsement of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson bid.
Babu Owino belongs to Raila Odinga’s political group, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and campaigned under the Azimio La Umoja coalition in the 2022 polls.
But Museveni feels that Babu Owino and others like him within the Kenyan opposition do not know what they are doing.
The Ugandan president of nearly four decades revealed that intelligence reports had continuously named Babu Owino among what he called “anti-NRM groups.
“There are some individuals in Raila’s group who I don’t think know what they are doing,” said Museveni.
“You know I am a consumer of intelligence services. So I always see intelligence service reports. There is a character called Babu. I always see Babu… Babu… Babu… dealing with anti-NRM groups. I have never accused him but now I am accusing Babu. But those are individuals, they are not the Raila Group.”
Museveni has previously accused foreign agents of meddling in Ugandan politics, with the latest accusation landing on organizers of the country’s Gen Z protests. (See Details Here, There and Over There).
