Museveni Military Court Blocks Besigye Lawyers

The trial has begun, in Kampala, Uganda, of opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye over charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition as well as allegations of undermining national security.

Besigye is appearing before a military court whose members are appointed by long serving president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Besigye was last month arrested in Nairobi, Kenya where he had gone to attend the launch of a book by former minister Martha Karua.

Karua was expected to lead Besigye’s legal team at the Makindye Military Court Martial.

Although she was present in court, her application for a temporary practicing certificate was yet to be granted by the Law Council of Uganda.

Karua expects a response on her application in coming days. She stayed quiet in court as lawyers Erias Lukwago and Eron Kiiza did the talking.

Lukwago and Kiiza successfully secured 30 minutes to talk with their clients Dr Besigye and Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya, with whom Besigye was abducted by Ugandan military in Kenya.

The military court also rejected several of Besigye’s lawyers for their lack of documents such as practicing certificates and issues to do with their firms.

Kiiza have some bitter exchange with the court martial members as he insisted Besigye and Kamulegeya had a right to choose whoever they can wanted to represent them and ones they were at liberty to fire.

The court martial labelled Besigye’s team unprepared and urged them to seek an adjournment to adequately process their documents. Court proceedings resume after a 30-minute break.
