Museveni Invited Anita Among for NRM CEC Meeting But She Refused to Attend Because of Security Reasons — Reports

President Yoweri Museveni reportedly invited outgoing Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among to attend a National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting, but she declined the invitation, citing concerns over her personal security and freedom of movement.

The NRM CEC met at least twice to discuss the positions of the speaker and deputy speaker of the 12th parliament but Anita Among, who is the second national vice chairperson of the ruling party, was not in attendance.

President Museveni, who is also the NRM national chairman, had instructed NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong and the chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission Tanga Odoi to invite Among despite ongoing investigations against her.

But, reports claimed, Anita Among declined to attend the meeting, and reportedly told Todwong and Odoi to inform the president and NRM national chairman that she did not feel safe enough to attend the high level party meeting.

Last week, several of Anita Among’s luxury cars and some of the official vehicles for the office of the speaker of parliament were taken away, the private ones to the police headquarters and the public ones to parliament’s parking.

It is said that Anita Among argued that the confiscation of the vehicles had made it difficult for her to move freely.

“These people [security] have made it hard for her to live freely. Yes, she was invited, but what car will she use? They took all her cars. She gave Parliament all their cars. There is a threat on her life,” a family source was quoted as telling government-owned newspaper New Vision.

For days now, security operations at have been conducted at Anita Among’s properties. These have included searches conducted at her residence in Kampala, her home in Wakiso District, as well as her main residence in Bukedea District.

Additional searches were said to have extended to properties linked to her family members and close associates.

It should be remembered that that Among was forced to withdraw from the race for Speaker of Parliament, a development that effectively cleared the way for changes in parliamentary leadership.

Meanwhile, Thomas Tayebwa has apologized over the wrongs committed by Anita Among and him during the 11th parliament, even as the Mitooma politician survived amidst reports that he was saved because he is a westerner. (See Details Here and There).
